Ink Shadows & Drifting Snow: An Ancient Alchemy of Fire

Crafted by Master He Bo-Quan, this extraordinary piece stands as a definitive monument to the rare “Nezumi Shino” (Gray Shino) legacy. Its profound character is born from a high-temperature crucible of intense atmospheric reduction.

Before firing, an iron-rich slip was meticulously coated onto the clay body, through which Master He deftly incised abstract botanical motifs. A thick layer of classic feldspathic glaze was then applied over the composition. During the rigorous reduction firing stage, the kiln was heavily starved of oxygen, chemically reducing the underlying iron slip into an enigmatic, smoky charcoal-gray hue. Concurrently, microscopic carbon elements in the kiln atmosphere became permanently captured within the melting glaze, creating the magnificent specks known as “carbon trapping.”

The lush, unctuous white glaze mimics the heavy presence of early spring snow resting elegantly atop ink-washed mountain crags. Turning the vessel reveals the raw, exposed clay of the foot ring, which has blossomed into rich peach-orange flashing marks under the absolute mastery of kiln control. This chawan is a sublime monument of Wabi-sabi aesthetics, capturing the untamable tempest of fire within the palm of your hand.
